Hemnath, was a happy five year old, when tragedy struck on a fine summer morning in 1993. He was taken to the clinic for fever, but instead was diagnosed with Leukemia. His parents - Mr. N L Hariharan, an electrical contractor and Mrs. Bhanumathy, a homemaker were shattered. Hemnath was their only son at that time. They wanted to give him the best treatment, hoping that somehow it would save him. They first treated him at a private hospital in Chennai, but hailing from a family of limited means, there wasn’t much that they could do. As funds exhausted, they shifted him to the Government Children’s Hospital at Egmore. Despite offering the best treatment, on 9th November 1993, their beloved son succumbed to the disease. Their grief paved the way for the inception of Cross Blood Foundation (CBF) in 1995 after the birth of their second son. Almost 30 years have passed since then and CBF continues to provide for children affected by cancer and other Blood disorders through different programmes. Mr. N L Hariharan became a familiar name among hospitals and blood banks all over the city and has touched the lives of over 1 million individuals through his service. CBF, under his leadership, has always been on the field when any disaster strikes. Our work during the COVID-19 lockdown had been extensive. Unfortunately, our Founder, Mr. N L Hariharan passed away on 8th October 2020 due to COVID-19. His son, Sam Isaac has taken over in his place and continues his legacy.
